Archiving trainers with a connection to Japan - this is the theme of this book, which traces back the history of Japanese trainer culture and lists models with a connection to Japan, large or small, including limited editions designed for the Japanese market, collaborations with Japanese creators and brands, made-in-Japan production, etc. The book is a visual databook consisting of a timeline of trainers associated with Japan and their highlights, organised by year and listing models with a connection to Japan, large or small.
The title of this book, ‘exclusive’, is not only a sneaker term for ‘exclusive’, but also an adjective for the general term, aiming for a volume of information for ‘specialist’ enthusiasts, and mobilising all the visuals, design and knowledge appropriate for a ‘high-end’ catalogue.
The first half of the 528 pages in total was recognised as a photogravure of epoch-making events in the sneaker chronology related to Japan: Nike, Nike SB, Hiroshi Fujiwara, sacai, COMME des GARÇONS, UNDERCOVER, WTAPS®, NEIGHBORHOOD® and BAPE®, NONNATIVE, N.HOOLYWOOD, AMBUSH®, BEAMS, mita sneakers, atmos and others. The latter half of the book contains a timeline of trainers associated with Japan from 1995 to 2022, with a textual overview of key topics and Japanese trainer culture every five years. In particular, we hope that the Sneaker Timeline of Japan, which forms the core of this publication, will be used not only as a chronological survey, but also as a diverse research resource by envisioning the correlation and ties between trainers.
